The concept of schizomusica is never more prevalent than at this time of year, with the onslaught of Christmas carols, seasonal songs, and general holiday party anthems, each performance more irreverent and far-removed from the “classic” version than the one before. From rockin’ renditions of solemn religious themes to cheesy strings oozing out normally upbeat, poppy favorites, nothing is safe from a disco version, a punk version, a reggae version, a bluegrass version, a heavy metal version…
So here are some chestnuts – to roast on an open fire or just throw at people wearing silly Santa hats? – that are hopefully fun but not too crazy-for-crazy’s-sake ridiculous. And a few completely original rock ‘n’ roll Christmas concoctions too.
